Canned Food Drive

The students at OHMS are collecting canned food items to be donated to the Utah Food Bank.  Please consider donating cans to help those served by the food bank.  The last day to collect cans will be Monday, April 16th.

Yearbook Orders

The last day to order a yearbook is April 20th.  The cost is $20.00.  Checks should be made out to OHMS, not to the PTSA.

Yearbooks will be given to the 9th graders on May 30th at 1:30pm to the 7th and 8th graders on May 31st at 1:30pm.

Proposed 2012-2013 PTA Executive Board

Here is the proposed 2012-2013 PTA executive board for Oquirrh Hills Middle School. As you can see, we still need to fill two board positions: treasurer and president-elect. While these positions may sound overwhelming, they’re really not. There is plenty of training and assistance, and we would love to have someone help us out. White Ribbon Week

Next week is White Ribbon Week at OHMS.  During this week OHMS will be working with the students to help them be aware of the dangers of pornography and what to do if you or someone you know comes across it or has an addiction to it.

On Wednesday, March 7th, a parents meeting will be held in the OHMS auditorium.  Parents from both OHMS and RHS are invited. The Fight the New Drug program will be presented.  After the presentation parents will be able to ask questions. We hope to see you there.

The next day, March 8th, during school both OHMS and RHS will have assemblies (separate) presented by the program.  

Board Positions

We Need You!

The Oquirrh Hills Middle School PTA is filling board positions for next year’s board, and we need your help! None of these positions require a great deal of time (even the President-Elect), yet they offer the perfect opportunity to become involved in the school and in your student’s life. The PTA plays a key role in providing important, fun, and rewarding activities for our students, and we couldn’t do it without you! Please consider helping us out next year—it really is time well spent!

·         President-Elect (shadows the 2012-2013 president and prepares to serve as president in 2013-2014)

·         Book Fair Coordinator (organizes and oversees our Book Fair, which is held two times a year during Student-Led Conferences)

·         Web Page Coordinator (keeps our PTA website up to date)

·         Volunteer Coordinator (organizes and oversees the PTA volunteers who are involved in the various PTA activities)

Volunteer at Book Fair

It is time for the Spring Book Fair at OHMS! This is a fundraiser for our Library. Please come and support us by 1 - buying some books and 2 - volunteering to help cover some shifts at the register!

 Dates: February 27 - March 1

Times: 7:30 - 3 on Mon.
          7:30- end of parent teacher conferences on Tues. & Wed.
          7:30 - end of lunch on Thur.

Harmons PTA Day

Hello Everyone-

It’s hard to believe that the school year is half over! We are looking forward to an exciting and fun-filled second semester. I just wanted to let you know about a few things that we have coming up. First, we have Harmons PTA Day on Thursday February 9. This is a very easy way for you to help raise some money for our school. Harmons donates 5% of their profits for that day to the participating schools. This year we were selected to participate at the South Jordan Harmons, 10507 South Redwood Road. So grab your grocery list and invite all your friends, and come visit us at Harmons. At 5 pm, they will be having the annual Principal’s Bagging Contest and our very own Mr. Anderson is the current reigning champion. Come cheer him on as he competes to keep his title! There will also be cookie decorating and fun games for the kids.

We are still in need of 5 volunteers to help us out at Harmons PTA Day. We need 2 people to help with the 3-5 pm shift, and 3 people to help with the 5-7 pm shift. We need one person to bag groceries (no prior experience needed) and 2 people to help in the cookie decorating booth. You must be over 18, and no children are permitted to be accompany you. Also, we will be having our second semester “Bring your Parent to School” day on Friday, February 24. If you would like to eat a school lunch with your child that day please let us know ASAP. Our cafeteria staff wants to make sure that there is enough food for everyone, so please email vicki.stoddard@jordan.k12.ut.us if you are planning on purchasing a school lunch.

Fight the New Drug

On March 8th OHMS will have an anti-pornography assembly put on by Fight the New Drug.org The purpose of this organization is outlined here:

During the Victorian era movement, in the 1850s, England passed the first laws against pornography. The laws did not stop the prolific spread of pornography and may have actually increased demand. In the 1970's and 1980's, the extreme feminists took up the banner of the anti-porn movement. Their approach was bellicose and divisive and focused on passing laws that were eventually found to be unconstitutional.

Learning from the past, Fight the New Drug takes a non-legislative, non-judgmental approach. We recognize an individual's right to view and produce pornography, however, once they are educated on the harmful effects of pornography we believe they will choose to avoid it. We only wish to educate about the negative effects of pornography on individuals, families, and businesses.

In our research, we've found that many people, especially Americans, automatically assume that the anti-pornography movement is at odds with First Amendment freedoms. Under that perception, people are asked to weigh the importance of free speech against the damaging effects of pornography. Fight the New Drug rejects this perception and we will position ourselves as anti-porn, pro-free speech.

Fight the New Drug's message is based on science and facts. In a sense, science is an international currency. We explain why porn is harmful by educating people about the negative psychological and physical reactions it causes. We do not affiliate ourselves with any religious groups or political agendas.

This movement is the result of many years spent developing ideas and researching the effects of pornography. Taking a fresh approach to the issue, we're a non-profit organization dedicated to help the young generation educate itself with the facts on pornography. We hope you will join us in this fight.

Bring Your Parents To School” day

You are invited to eat lunch with your child in the cafeteria, but we need to give the Lunch Ladies a heads up if you will be purchasing a school lunch. If you plan to take your student off campus for lunch, you will need to check him/her out in the attendance office.
