·  Volunteers for Oquirrh Fest – Need volunteers in the morning and at both lunches.  Sent list around for sign ups.

Eagle of the Quarter – January – Things are in control! There was a suggestion to offer fruit at the breakfast as another option.

Principal’s Report – Mr. Glenn
·         Oquirrh Fest is going well. We have $7,000 so far but it usually goes up the last week. The jail is going great! There is so much positive energy!  Healing Hearts, Riverton Holiday Heroes. Gordman’s is matching up $2,500 to buy clothes for teens that need clothes. That should help about 250 kids.
·         Some of the different groups that came up with the ideas for Oquirrh Fest: PTSA, Stage Crew, SBO’s, Lit Magazine, Science Olympiad, Soar.
·         Next year they want to focus on a Service-a-thon at the Elementary

·         Voting on change for graduation requirements:
1.      Computer Tech – a mandatory 8th grade class was proposed. Currently, it is required in 7th or 8th. It will be called Digital Literacy – it is a 1 semester class.
2.      PE may only be required in 8th or 9th
·         Every teacher has a computer lab
·         Math is on video so they can watch it over if they need it.
·         Using Tech to make our classes more engaging
·         Kids are cheating – taking pictures and sending to friends.
·         More quizzes
·         Blended learning – learning technology to help with learning
·         Standard Based Grading – we are moving towards this in all classes.


Counseling Center – Mr. Cherry
·  Reality Town – Thank you for Reality Town!!
·  End of Year testing – usually 5 weeks and SAGE will be 1 essay instead of 2.
·  It will start May 7th and be in a 2-block schedule – different departments will test each day.
·  7-8th grade test
·  9th grade – no test
·  10th grade Inspire – ACT Prep test
·  11th ACT
·  BYU Credit Recovery Program – needs hours of work from Mr. Cherry. We will need to set it all up. We can pick standards we want to focus on. Our goal is to launch mid-way 3rd Quarter
·  Testing – May 18th
·  AP Test Geography will be at Oquirrh
·  Utah Scholars – not doing it this year.
·  Regents – there are changes in the program. It will be based more on need.
·  PTA Day at the Capital – Mr. Glenn must get a drug test. Andrea Hogan will be the other driver. Rebecca VanSkyHawk will be going this year.

President's Report – Shannon Smith
·         Cone meeting/volunteer hours – This is a meeting between all school for questions, concerns and updates. *Required 4 times/year
·         Includes Riverton, South Hills, OHMS and Feeder Elementary Schools
·         1st Hour – Counselors *R277-717 Law trying to pass for credit recovery.
·         2nd Hour – Counselors, Admin, PTA, CTE, Community Partner (RPT)
·         Talked about Credit Recovery, BYU, 27 credits to graduate, Mastery Grading

PTC Dinners
·         Dinners were great! There are a few leftovers for next month PTA Meeting.
·         Budget for Teacher’s Bdays is $200.00

Book Fair – Tressa
·         We made $1,300 Scholastic Dollars
·         $400 for Language Arts Teachers
·         $900 for the school
·         We got an extra $100 this time because we put it in the newsletter

Reflections – Oct 11th – Noel/Jennie reported
·         Breakfast Nov 9th during TA for winners
·         We had about 50 entries
·         Principal’s Award

Red Ribbon Week November 6-10 - Beth Kunz
·         We need volunteers Wed and Friday during both lunches to help with games and handing out donuts
·         Our theme is Real Heroes Don’t Do Drugs
·         Monday - Who’s your hero?
·         Tuesday – 1St Responders
·         Wednesday – Don’t Do Drugs – Military Camo/Red
·         Thursday – Teacher Hero – Wear Teacher favorite color/crazy hair day

Principal’s Report – Mr. Glenn
·         Mr. Glenn thanked the PTSA for: Blue Ribbon Week, Red Ribbon Week, Parent/Teacher Conference Dinners, Book Fair
·         Technology Update: We got a grant for 9 more Chromebook computers, 3 more mobile labs, 2 more Ed Tech $$
·         Every teacher has a mobile lab
·         Canvas/Google Classroom
·         Nov 15th – Fine Arts Field Trip to Riverton for Play

Counseling Center – Mr. Cherry
·         Reality Town – Nov 7th from 8:00 – 9:45 and 10:00 - 11:45
·         Job based on GPA from 7th & 8th grade
·         Standard Based Grading – starting next semester in Language Arts for Grades 7, 8 and 9 (Grades are 4, 3, 2, 1)
·         BYU Credit Recovery – Trying to get launched before Christmas

Update:  PTSA bought 300 beanies - $7.00, trucker hats and baseball caps - $10.00 and socks for Student of the Month.

October 2017 OHMS PTSA Meeting Minutes

October 5, 2017

Meeting commenced at: 12:39
Pledge/Thought:  Shannon proposed that we say the “Pledge of Allegiance” at our meetings. It was seconded and affirmed by a vote.
Attendance: Beth Kunz, Stephanie Hansen, Maxine Conrad, Tressa Spigarelli, Emily Stout, Shannon Smith, Brittany Maxfield, Noel Hinton, Steve Cherry, Denise Heninger, and Andrea Hogan. Jill Smith and Mike Glenn excused.

President's Report – Shannon Smith
·         Council Meeting—discussed lower membership numbers in recent years both in Utah and nationwide. Shannon raised the question of how little money stays at the school level. Others explained that higher level PTA members negotiate for Trustland funds. Without greater membership and funding, we could lose positions at the state level.
·         September minutes approved.

Treasurer’s Report and Budget - Stephanie Hansen
·         Current balance is $16265.54, and we have 187 members of PTSA at OHMS.

PTSA – Ms. Hogan
·         Had 25 Seventh graders apply to be on the PTSA leadership team.
·         Has some new Eighth and Ninth graders this year.
·         Working on a sweatshirt design for the PTSA students.
·         Prison prints shirts at cost. Contact at 801-576-7738 or uciclothing @utah,gov. Go to companycasuals.com to get order number for the desired style.

Reflections – Noel
·         Due date is Wednesday, Oct 11, 2017. She used PTSA students to help put up posters around the school. She had vinyl banners to put up on the fences. The projects will be displayed in the Media Center, nad there will be an awards breakfast in November. She will pass out treats on Monday to make the students aware of the Reflections due date, and Steve will send out a Skylert. (Later that deadline was extended through Wednesday, Oct 18, 2017 at 3:00 PM. All students were sent a Skylert to make them aware of the change.)

PTC Dinners – Oct 11 & 12 – Denise/Brittany
·         Wednesday is Soup, Salad, Bread and Pumpkin Desserts
·         Thursday is a Taco Bar—will have vegetarian and gluten-free options available.

Book Fair – Tressa
·         Feels that she has enough help to set-up and run the Book Fair this year.


Eagle of the Quarter – Emily
·         Everything on track for the 16th, 17th, and 18th. PTSA students will help with this.

Principal’s Report – Mr. Glenn (excused)

Counseling Center – Mr. Cherry
·         Reality Town—needs 50 volunteers. A lunch students will go first, and B lunch students will go second.


Assignments:
·         Vision Screening 10/24/17—needs 10 volunteers.
·         PTSA Flyer to hand out at Parent/Teacher Conferences


New Business:
·         Blue Ribbon Week feedback was positive.
·         Red Ribbon Week on track will get 1200 donuts from Peterson’s for 11/6/17.
·         Memory Book—students working on choosing a cover.
·         Ideas to boost PTSA membership: Airborne, Fast Pass for lunch, Arctic Circle coupons, and student drawings. For faculty—3 pairs of airline tickets for a total of 6 tickets (Jill Smith).

REFLECTIONS 2017-2018

The PTA Reflections Program is underway! “Within Reach” is the theme for this year. You can enter a project in one or more of these categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography and Visual Arts. The due date for entries is Wednesday, October 11th by 3:00 pm in the office. There will be a table set up in front of the office that morning. All the rules and forms can be accessed here - http://www.utahpta.org/reflections . You can also pick up an entry packet in the office. You will need to complete a Student Entry Form, Artist Statement and Consent Form if required for your category (please view the “Consent Form Guidelines”). Make sure you closely read and comply with the “Rules Summary” and the specific rules for the category(s) you enter. You may submit 1 entry PER category. Prizes for all participants…so, encourage your friends to participate. Get your creative juices flowing…we can’t wait to see what you create! ·         Some schools are adding the membership to their yearbooks.
·         We can offer JetBlue Travel Certificates as incentive.
·         1 set for Teachers & Staff

·         We do have Airborne and Arctic Circle certificates to give away.
·         OHMS charges $6.00 that breaks down to: $1.75 State PTA, $2.25 National PTA, .35 cents Council and $1.65 to OHMS
·         Jordan Foundation Scholarships – We can get from $2,000 to $7,000 in scholarships each year if we apply.

PTC Dinners – Parent/Teacher Conferences will be Oct 11th & 12th  Brittany and Denise have it handled!

PTSA Report – Welcome Ms. Hogan!  She reported that they are starting to collect applications and will do interviews next week.  They will be taking 5-6 new PTSA Student members.

Red Ribbon Week – Nov 6-10 – More details to come. Peterson’s will make the donuts. They are giving us a good deal!

Blue Ribbon week –
·         Netsmartz Assembly – is scheduled for Thurs, Sept 28th during 3, 4, and 5th periods. They will discuss anti-cyber bullying and “Being a good digital citizen”
·         . Peterson’s will make the donuts. They are giving us a good deal again.

Counseling Center – Mr. Cherry
·         Diversity Week – Counseling Center will be coordinating with Foreign Language Week to talk about Diversity and Tolerance. There is lots of diversity at OHMS: LGBT, Transgender, Race, Ethnic and Different Countries.  Discussed activities such as Wall of Tolerance, Balloons in different colors, etc.  “How are we all diverse but all the same = OHMS Eagles.

·         “Everyone Belongs”
·         Survival Skills Unit
·         Parent University
·         Reality Town coming, Tuesday, Nov 7th
·         Trying to meet with all 7th graders by the end of September – One on one interaction with each student
·         Individual Meetings for 8th graders will start the week of November 6th,
·         Regence Scholarship – There is a conference on Sept 29th that Mr. Cherry will attend to get new information.
·         BYU Credit Recovery Program – Mr. Cherry has been meeting with them and has found some great things out about this program. 
v  All classes align with State standards
v  Costs are reasonable
v  New law says you can replace your grade with new grade if class is retaken.

·         Hello Week – Next week is Assembly
·         Excited for a new year!
·         7th Grade elections coming up.
·         Enrollment is stable
·         Reports show OHMS Student Body is 1079 this year.
·         Mentioned OHMS will be selling beanies and looking into knitted socks with OHMS logo on them.
·         Last Day of the Quarter is Oct 26th
·         Community Council Meeting is September 14th at 5:30 pm
·         Standard Based Grading – 4,3,2,1,0 – We have 7 teachers trying it out this year.

Reflections: Noel Hinton is in charge and she has set a due date of Oct 11th for submissions from OHMS students. All projects are due to Council by the 1st of November. She is looking for judges to help.

***** We discussed moving the meeting to 12:30 or 12:45 so Mrs Hogan can come during her lunch.  We can each bring our brown bag lunches J
