OHMS PTSA – Meeting Minutes
December 6, 2018

Welcome/ Pledge: Maxine Conrad
Meeting commenced at: 11:52 PM
Attendance: Maxine Conrad, Mike Glenn, Denise Heninger, Rebecca Van Skyhawk, Andrea Hogan, Steve Cherry, Jill Smith, Emily Stout, and Cheryl Anderson
Excused: Amy Powell
Treasurer’s Report: Amy Powell (Denise Heninger)
Balance is currently close to $25,000. However, after the PTSA dues, Scholastic Book Fair payment, Memory book deposit, and a few miscellaneous expenses are paid, the balance will be around $15,500.

PTSA: Andrea Hogan
PTSA Students received their sweatshirts. The PTSA portion was $200 total. Each student had to pay $11.50 each. Students are selling suckers and hair scrunchies for Oquirrh Fest. If they want to sell them in front of Peterson’s Fresh Market while the SBO students are caroling, they need to contact Brandon Peterson. If there are leftover suckers, the Soar Store will buy them at cost.

Legislative Report: Rebecca Van Skyhawk
Planning Legislative Day at the Capitol for February. Will include the PTSA, SBO, and SOAR Students. Is researching dates and itineraries and will report in January.
President's Report – Maxine Conrad

·         Approval of November 2018 Minutes: Denise 1st; Jill 2nd--Approved
·         Volunteers for Oquirrh Fest: Need volunteers in the morning and at both lunches—Passed around sign-up sheet.
·         Membership Drive/Contest: Deadline January 11, 2019 for PTSA Membership—Mr. Glenn will put a notice on a Skylert message. Jill will procure the necessary JetBlue tickets.
·         Nominating Committee: Rebecca Van Skyhawk, Brittany Maxfield, and Emily Stout. Alternate: Amy Powell.

  
Reflections: Denise Heninger

·         Awards Breakfast—went well had a little mix-up but worked it out.
·         The “Principal’s Award” did two of them, but could do more if we have more entries
·         Council Awards for Reflections: January 3, 2019

Principal’s Report: Mike Glenn
·         Oquirrh Fest is benefitting:
o   Gordman’s giving program $2500
o   Riverton Heroes Sub for Santa $2500
o   The remainder will go to the Lymphoma/Leukemia Association for research and to help families with outstanding medical bills.
·         The students learn that giving a little can help in big ways.

Counseling Center: Steve Cherry
·         Reality Town went well.
·         The 8th grade meetings to plan for high school are almost finished.
·         Will meet with any 9th grader who has a “D” or “F” on midterms.
·         Utah Scholars will be handled by the OHMS Counseling Team.
·         Rah Rah and 7th grade registration for January 24, 2019.
·         New parent/student orientation for 8th and 9th graders coming from other schools due to the boundary changes will be held on January 31, 2019.
·         9th graders walk to RHS on February 14, 2019 to tour CTE Programs.
·         Career Day will be on March 7, 2019. Will poll students to decide which careers to highlight.
·         7th Grade will have Job Shadow that day; 8th grade College visits? 9th grade career presentations.

Treasurer’s Report and Budget: Amy Powell
·         Budget—Everything looks good so far, and is under budget
·         Balance—October 1, 2018: $16,901.75
·         Will write reimbursement checks at meeting
·         Reality Town water coming out of which budget?

PTSA: Andrea Hogan
·         Oquirrh Fest Volunteers—supervise cash boxes before school and during lunches.
·         Oquirrh Fest Activities—Christmas suckers and scrunchies; students making posters.

PTC Dinners: Jill Smith & Brittany Maxfield
            Soups and Hawaiian Haystacks in February

Book Fair: Tressa Spigarelli
Made $2900 in sales; received $1400 back in Scholastic dollars which were used by teachers to purchase books for their classrooms.

            Went well—dates for January 15-17

·         Breakfast Nov 7th during TA for winners—we had about 20 entries
·         Principal’s Award
·         Due to Council on November 16th
·         Could use more teacher involvement to boost student involvement.

Red Ribbon Week: Beth Kunz and Wendy Osborne January 22-25, 2019

·         School Board will meet on Tuesday to finalize new boundaries.
·         Might impact ALPS students
·         Oquirrh Fest coming at the end of November/will emphasize serving to raise money


Counseling Center: Steve Cherry
·         Standards Based Grading
·         Collaboration helps to boost scores
·         8th Grade individual meetings/PCCR’s/4-year plan can now be accessed on Skyward
·         Only 86 total F’s in 1st Quarter/down from other years.

OHMS PTSA President's Message


Welcome Back Eagles!

We're planning to have another awesome year at OHMS. Our new president is Maxine Conrad. She has two students at Oquirrh Hills Middle School. She has a 9th grader and her youngest is in the 7th grade. She brings a unique perspective having grown up in England, and being educated there. She looks forward to getting to know the staff, students and parents here at Oquirrh Hills. At present we are trying to fill the position of president-elect. If you have a nominee—please let us know. If you would like to volunteer with the PTSA please email us at ohmsptsa@gmail.com. 

We have many great activities planned, including Reflections, Blue Ribbon Week, Red Ribbon Week, White Ribbon Week, Book Fair, and the Memory Book. Please join the PTSA in the office today. It is only $6.00, and it helps us to sponsor these many activities. PTSA meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at 11:45 AM in the OHMS Board Room near the main office. Please feel free to join us for any of our upcoming meetings. Check out our blog on the OHMS website and our Facebook page.

You can enter a project in one or more of these categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography and Visual Arts. The due date for entries is Tuesday, October 16th in the office. All the rules and forms can be accessed here - http://www.utahpta.org/reflections . You will need to complete a Student Entry Form, Artist Statement and Consent Form if required (please view the “Consent Form Guidelines”). Make sure you closely read and comply with the “Rules Summary” and the specific rules for the category(s) you enter. You may submit 1 entry PER category. Prizes for all participants…so, encourage your friends to participate. Get your creative juices flowing…we can’t wait to see what you create! Oquirrh Hills Middle School PTSA Meeting
September 6, 2018

Welcome/Pledge: Maxine
Start time: 11:47 AM
Attendance: Denise Heninger, Amy Powell, Tressa Spigarelli, Emily Stout, Maxine Conrad, Steve Cherry, Mike Glenn, Jill Smilth, and Andrea Hogan. (Brittany Maxfield & Rebecca Van Sky Hawk—excused)
Approval of Minutes: Motion by Maxine; second by Tressa—vote was affirmative.
Treasurer’s Report & Budget—Amy Powell: Soar amount and Field Day numbers were accidentally switched on draft. Amy to ask Becky if the school needs reimbursement ($500) for Emergency Buckets. Discussed grant for school for Soar Store. Reimbursements will be done once a month. Suggestion for school gift: concrete benches for the students along the front of building under the overhanging roof area. Should have a “Needs Assessment” in the spring. Approval of Budget: Motion by Jill; second by Tressa—vote was affirmative.

PTSA Report—Andrea Hogan: Applications being accepted for 7th Grade PTSA students. Will select 4 or 5. Google form sent to teachers to recommend students. The PTSA students are helping with the combined Blue and White Ribbon Week.

Book Fair—Tressa Spigarelli: Set-up on 9-28. Will get money for change from Amy. The book fair will be open before school, during lunch and during Parent/Teacher Conferences. PTSA students will put up posters and help run the Book Fair. Mr. Cherry will send out a Skyward email to find parent volunteers to sign-up online. There will be teacher gifts for Language Arts, Reading, and Special Education teachers to get books.

Blue & White Ribbon Week—Beth Kunz: 9/24 to 9/28. Netsmartz assembly on the 27th.Blue Ribbon Days: Mon, Tue, Wed, and White Ribbon Days: Thu and Fri. Colin Kartchner “Let’s Get Real” Assembly 9/18/18 about setting healthy Social Media Boundaries.

Red Ribbon Week: January 22-25, 2019. Wendy Osborne will be in charge, Beth, Denise and Amy will assist.

President’s Report—Maxine Conrad:
            This Year’s Board—Still need a President Elect and several other positions filled.
            Parent Teacher Conferences – Dinners (Wed Oct 3 and Thu Oct 4)—May need extra help.
            Setup Table with PTA Info at Parent Teacher Conferences with a more exciting theme!!!
            Reflections Update—Denise will work with Noel Hinton and Jill Smith
            Ethics and Fiscal Management – Board members signed both forms.





Principal’s Report—Mike Glenn:

            OHMS Enrollment is 1113 for 2018
Calendar Items/Year-at-a-Glance needs to be updated and sent to Terry Price
            Netsmartz Assembly September 27th—Internet Saftey
Hope Squad—Audrey Fish: Students nominate peers to help in time of crisis/ put together squad by next week. Ms. Patty, Ms. Allsop, Ms. Anderson and Mr. Williams are advisors. Will meet the last Wednesday of the month. There will be Hope Squad t-shirts and hoodies.


Counseling Center—Steve Cherry:
            Nicole Thurmond is the new counselor: her students are H to O
            7th grade Field Trip to Weedon Farm on 9/19/18—two sessions. Need parents chaperones to come.
            Reality Town 11/1/18 will need 50 volunteers.
            Suicide Prevention will be presented to each grade level at different times.

New Business:
Emily Stout: Eagle of the Quarter is scheduled for 10/30; 10/31; and 11/1. Will check for possible conflicts with Halloween.

·         Proposed money in budget for Soar Store ($1000), Study Skills ($100), To-Go Emergency Kits ($500), Counseling Center—Reality Town and Career Day ($100), You-Make-a-Difference-Week ($250) and OHMS Grant ($1500).

Schedule for Last Week of School:
·         Monday (May 28th) – Labor Day – No School
·         Tuesday (May 29th)– Field Day
·         Wednesday (May 30th)– Yearbooks / Award Assembly
·         Thursday (May 31st) – Lagoon Day
·         Friday (June 1st) – Last Day
·         Opt-in letter for Language Arts, Science and Math – if you get 3 or 4 on Sage testing you don’t have to take the final.  It’s all about **Demonstrating Proficiency 

Counseling Center – Mr. Cherry
·         AP Geography Testing – May 18th
o   95 are taking the test
o   Each student has to be 4 feet apart from another student/testing in annex
o   They will have 3 test locations.
·         Sage Testing starts May 7th – There will be a 2 week block schedule
o   1st week – Language Arts
o   2nd week – Math / Science
o   93 minute block of time to take test. They will use Fridays as make up days for those that miss a day.
o   3rd week – Counselors will test in the Counseling Center for those that missed or are absent.

Calendar:
Teacher Appreciation May 7-11—Thursday’s Luncheon Texas Roadhouse $4 per person (85 people): pulled pork, 2 rolls, honey butter, and salad (sent chicken breasts for gluten free option).Contact Alisha Oliver 801-699-1473

Other business:  We need someone to replace Stephanie Hansen on the Parent Literacy Selection Committee.

Eagle of the Quarter: Emily Stout
·         This Quarter it will be May 15th for 9th Graders and May 17th for 7th & 8th graders
·         The assembly will be at 9:30 AM and the reception at 10:00 AM

Assignments: Volunteer Spot for Yearbook Distribution and Field Day.


New Business:
·         Auditing Committee needs 3 people to help Audit the books. We will discuss more at our next meeting.
